I would call myself a pretty high strung person — I’m easily anxious with OCD tendencies, which makes “letting go” difficult. But I recently came across something on social media that really resonated with me. The main point was that our culture places so much mindless emphasis and value on being constantly stressed out that the ability to relax and enjoy oneself seems entirely foreign, often met with questioning, even negative, responses. An overworked, overwhelmed member of society — OMG so relatable. But one who actually finds time for rest, relaxation, and self reflection? Who even are you?!
With this at the front of my mind recently, I’ve taken conscious steps toward first acknowledging my own taboo against prioritizing self care and mental health, and then working to give it more prominence in my day-to-day. First up? A summer Friday this week dedicated to doing absolutely nothing. I would love to know your thoughts and suggestions on practicing healthy mental habits! As my dad says, “zen is the new trend.”
